Yuuki is about 1.75 meters in height. His body is composed of a mixture of metal alloys and high-durability plastic. His eyes are round camera lenses that give him a slightly unsettling expression. He has the Kanji characters for courage (Yuuki) emblazoned on his chest.

Yuuki is a Free Robot. Although emancipated robots are possible, it requires a special order signed at the planetary government level to emancipate a robot. These are about as rare as presidential pardons.
Yuuki was originally Techbot-1138, maintenance and repair robot on a luxury passenger liner. The liner was carrying the daughter of a ruler trying to ally itself with Clan Odachi. The passenger liner ran afoul of pirates/terrorists, and though the criminals were driven off, the liner was left temporarily crippled. This was particularly bad since the liner was in the path of a major ion storm. A coupling needed to be replaced on the exterior. A tech robot was selected to go outside and do the repair.
By happenstance, the travelling princess insisted on being on the bridge during the repair and heard the robot reporting in. She was impressed by his perseverence as the storm slowly eroded his operating systems. By all of the design specs, the robot should have failed. Indeed, the crew lost contact with him five minutes before the storm was to hit. It was too late to send out another robot. At the last moment the people on the bridge heard the crackling report, "Repair completed".
The ship was able to jump in time. Despite the captain explaining to the young princess that the robot was only performing as it had to, she was convinced it had heroically saved all their lives. Maybe it had. In any case, she asked for his emancipation as a wedding present. In a moment of good humor, the Clan head signed the paperwork.
Techbot-1138 was a total mess after the exposure to the particle storm. The princess saw to it that he was completely repaired and upgraded. His AI circuits were upgraded to state of the art. He was aware, and grateful for the gift of freedom. As a final gift, the young monarch gave him the name Yuuki, meaning courage.
All this happened a long time ago. The Princess is long consigned to a tomb and no one is alive who remembers his finest moment. But still he plugs on. He is no longer state of the art, and he has been repaired many times. These days he is a simple traveller of the space lanes, trying to keep himself charged. He is an accomplished technicican, but finds it difficult to get employment. Few people want to hire a robot. Either they make an offer to buy him, or they would rather hire a human.
His big break came two years ago, when he signed aboard the Naginata, a freighter of dubious legality. He was found at an automated refueling station used by ships that lack the fuel reserves to make the long run to Aoki. This particular station had been taken over by pirates who were trying to use it as a base to disable and then steal ships. The remoteness of the place made it ideal. Yuuki had been working a small private yacht that the pirates attacked. They brutally murdered the crew, but the ship was too badly damaged in the fight for the pirates to make any use of it. Yuuki was overlooked in the carnage and managed to hide aboard the station. For weeks he sneaked around until he was discovered and put to work by the pirates. They thought he was a mere maintenance machine and set him to work improving their sabotage capabilities.
When the next ship came by (the Naginata), the pirates attempted their ruse again. Yuuki of course had free will all this time and had set up emergency cutoffs in the pirate's combat resources. Things went very badly for the pirates indeed. They were either killed or captured (GM choice), and the Naginata got through with only minor damage. In gratitude, Captain Hiro offered Yuuki a job. Yuuki gratefully accepted, since it was also a way to get off the refueling station.
He has worked for Hiro ever since. He draws a salary, which goes toward upgrades and backups.
The crew knows that Yuuki is built in the general shape of a robot whose model was popular in the time of their grandfathers. Conversely, he has had many modern modifications. Kind of like a classic car that has a cd player and lots of after market stuff added.

Yuuki is motivated to keep himself in repair. He has the self-preservation instinct of any sentient being. He is generally guided by the three laws of robotics insofar as is any functioniing member of a society. But the hard-wiring to maintina those behaviors was long ago removed.
These days, Yuuki works aboard the Naginata, a place that is as much home as any he has known. He is comfortable here where the crew generally acepts him and he would be loathe to give it up.
Yuuki has none of that Pinnochio complex found in so many sci android characters. he is quite content with being a robot. He does find humans interesting, though, and has little understanding of the human concept of tact.

Yuuki is not a terrifically talented combatant and would rather avoid a fight if possible. He prefers to go about unarmed, since the sight of an armed robot makes people a bit nervous. He can however, deliver a hefty jolt of DC current from his fingertips if necessary, much like a taser. Yuuki can survive in a great many harmful environements, being designed for both atmospheric and vaccuum operation.

Yuuki is the engineer/tech character. Being quite old, he can also be used by the GM to deliver any bit of trivia from before the current era.
